Overview
Course Title: Coptic Language
Level: Diploma
Course Objective:
The course aims to further equip students with comprehensive proficiency in the Coptic language, encompassing reading, writing, and spoken communication skills. Through structured instruction and practice, students will develop the ability to read and write in Coptic, effectively communicate verbally, and utilise daily vocabulary and phrases in practical contexts. Additionally, students will gain a foundational understanding of sentence construction and become familiar with basic liturgical prayers in the Coptic Orthodox Church.
Learning Outcomes:
This modular block provides opportunities for students to demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding cognitive (thinking) skills and other skills and attributes in the following areas:
1- Learning the alphabet of the Coptic Language
2- Learning pronunciation of the Coptic Language
3- Learning to use daily words and phrases in Coptic
4- To understand the historic background and development of the Coptic Language.
5- Learn basics of Coptic grammar and sentence construction
6- Comfortably read and understand basic liturgical prayers
Course Structure:
• Fundamentals of the history of the Coptic language and its Pharaonic roots.
• Language Pronunciation: Study of the phonetics and correct pronunciation of the language that is currently used by the Coptic Church with acknowledgement of the existing dialects throughout the long history of Egypt.
• Integration of the Coptic Language into present day Egyptian Arabic: Understanding the integration of the Coptic language into the modern Arabic mother tongue of Egypt.
• Translation: Be able to comfortably translate basic daily sentences and phrases from Coptic to other languages and vice versa.
• Read, Write and Speak: Be able to grasp good command of the basic utilisation of the Coptic language with the main intent of understanding the liturgical prayers.
• Lectures to introduce new knowledge to the candidates, basic definitions, concepts and facts.
• Distance learning and listening to recorded videos for teaching the Coptic language.
• Utilising specified resources for augmenting the didactic component for learning the Coptic language.
Assessment:
- Two term exams to evaluate overall comprehension and proficiency including translation phrases to and from Coptic and other languages.
Prerequisites:
Coptic Language Certificate, GCSE certificate, high school or equivalent certificate.
Delivery Method:
The course will be delivered entirely online through a learning management system. All lectures are delivered by Zoom. Participants will have access to recorded lecture videos, reading materials, and discussion forum on the course website.
Duration: October 2023-June 2024
Certificate:
Upon successful completion of the course and passing the final exam, participants will receive the TEACH diploma in Coptic Language. The diploma will only be received upon completion and passing of the two term exams.
