Course Title: Liturgy of the Word
Level: Certificate
Course Objective:
According to the Coptic rites, the Devine Liturgy consists of two parts; the liturgy of the
Sacrament (described as the liturgy of the believers) and the liturgy of the Word (commonly
described as the liturgy of the catechists). In essence the two liturgies stem from the
mysterious work of the Word of God (the second hypostasis) through His read Word and
through His Body and Blood, respectively.
The Coptic church has a beautifully designed structure of the liturgy of the Word with various
readings; Vespers and Matins gospels, Pauline and catholic epistles and the book of Acts,
ending up by celebrating the exact words of the Word of God in the Gospel. Such order was
not put haphazardly but with great wisdom. In this course you will study such structure in detail
and how to benefit from each of its components
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the Structure of the Coptic Liturgy of the Liturgy of the Word: Gain a
comprehensive understanding of the structure and components of the Coptic Liturgy of the
Word, including its various readings from the Vespers and Matins gospels, Pauline and catholic
epistles, and the book of Acts, culminating in the celebration of the Gospel, recognising the
intentional design and wisdom behind this structure.
2. Examine the Theological Significance: Explore the theological significance of the Liturgy of
the Word within the context of the Coptic Orthodox Church, understanding how the readings

written Word and His Body and Blood, fostering a deeper appreciation for the sacramental and
liturgical dimensions of Coptic worship.
