Course Objective:
This course aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of Patrology within the context of the Coptic Orthodox Church through comprehensive study and analysis of the writings, lives, and teachings of the early Church Fathers. By the end of the course, students will have acquired a foundational understanding of Patrology in the Coptic Orthodox Church, enabling them to engage critically with the writings and teachings of the early Church Fathers, appreciate their theological contributions, and apply their insights to contemporary theological inquiry, pastoral ministry, and spiritual formation within the Coptic Orthodox community.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Historical Context: Students will explore the historical background and development of Patrology, understanding its significance in the formation and expansion of Christianity, with a particular focus on the contributions of early Church Fathers within the Coptic Orthodox tradition.
2. Primary Sources: Students will engage with primary sources of Patristic literature, including the writings of prominent Church Fathers such as Saint Athanasius, Saint Cyril of Alexandria, Saint Shenouda the Archimandrite, and others, gaining insight into their theological perspectives, pastoral insights, and contributions to Christian doctrine.
3. Theological Themes: Students will analyze key theological themes and doctrinal controversies addressed by the early Church Fathers, including the nature of the Trinity examining the relevance to contemporary theological discourse within the Coptic Orthodox Church.
4. Pastoral Application: Students will reflect on the pastoral implications of Patristic teachings, considering their relevance to pastoral ministry, spiritual formation, and the life of the Church, with a focus on integrating Patristic wisdom into contemporary pastoral practices within the Coptic Orthodox context.
5. Cultural and Spiritual Heritage: Students will explore the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Coptic Orthodox Church through the lens of Patrology, understanding the influence of early Church Fathers on Coptic liturgy, spirituality, monasticism, and ascetic traditions.
6. Critical Analysis: Students will develop critical thinking skills through the analysis and evaluation of primary sources, secondary literature, and scholarly interpretations of Patristic texts, fostering an appreciation for the complexities and nuances of Patristic thought within the Coptic Orthodox tradition.

Prerequisites:
Introduction to Patrology Certificate and Diploma.
Delivery Method:
The course will be delivered entirely online through a learning management system. All lectures
are delivered by Zoom. Participants will have access to recorded lecture videos, reading
materials, and discussion forum on the course website.
Duration: October 2024-June 2025
Certificate:
Upon successful completion of the course and passing the final exam, candidates will receive the TEACH High Diploma in Introduction to Patrology. The certificate will only be received upon completion and passing of the two term exams.
