Course Title: Coptic Hymnology
Level: High Diploma
Course Objective:
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Coptic
hymnology within the context of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Through in-depth exploration
and analysis of liturgical lyrics, hymns, chants, and musical traditions, students will develop a
deep understanding and application of Coptic Hymnology.
By the end of the course, students will have acquired a comprehensive understanding of
Coptic hymnology, enabling them to engage critically with hymnographic texts, appreciate the
theological depth and musical beauty of Coptic hymns, and apply their knowledge in the
context of worship, ministry, and personal spiritual growth within the Coptic Orthodox Church.
Learning Outcomes:
1) Clear understanding of the structure and contents of St Basil Liturgy according to the
Coptic rite.
2) Studying the historical development of the St Basil liturgy over the centuries until its
current shape
3) Appreciation of the beauty of the liturgical music of St Basil Liturgy and its role in
impacting people thoughts and emotions according to the meaning of the lyrics.
Course Structure:
Worshipping the Holy Trinity During the Liturgy of St Basil according to the Coptic rite.
Assessment:
– Two term exams to evaluate overall comprehension and proficiency.
Prerequisites:
TEACH Coptic Hymnology Certificate and Diploma courses.
Delivery Method:
The course will be delivered entirely online through a learning management system. All lectures
are delivered by Zoom. Participants will have access to recorded lecture videos, reading
materials, and discussion forum on the course website.
Duration: October 2023-June 2024
Certificate:
Upon successful completion of the course and passing the final exam, participants will receive
the TEACH High Diploma in Coptic Hymnology. The High Diploma will only be received upon
completion and passing of the two term exams.
